Maidens @ Great Yorkshire Showdown (AWAY)

Our Maidens are heading down to compete in the awesome Great Yorkshire Showdown, hosted by the awesome Leeds Roller Derby!

Six teams will play two 30-minute games each, with the two most successful teams from each bracket going on to compete in a full length game for the winner’s title.

Advance tickets are £10, tickets on the day will be £12. Children under the age of 16 get free entry.

Parking

The Edge does have its own on-site parking but is very limited in spaces and usually fills up fast. The next nearest parking is a multi-storey car park next to The Edge called “Orange Zone Car Park”.

GRD are excited to announce our Harder Better Faster Stronger Bootcamp!

Open to 18+ WFTDA aligned skaters with 2 or fewer game experience (or newer skaters with a bit more game experience who want to brush up on basic skills). Learn individual/team skills and tactics to take your game to the next level. Includes a strategy 101 class and directed scrim.

  • 11-11:30 - Strategy chat

  • 11:30-11:45 - Kit up/warm up

  • 11:45-12:40 - Catch tactics - blocker focus on catching a jammer approaching at speed. Jammer focus on avoiding being caught by the wall.

  • 12:40-1:10 - Lunch and optional game day prep chat (There is a café on site or you can bring a packed lunch)

  • 1:10-2:10 - Containing tactics/. Blocker focus on working as a unit to contain a jammer within the wall. Jammer focus in breaching and weakening the wall.

  • 2:00-2:30 - Offence skills- individual skills to get your jammer out

  • 2:35-3:00 - Coping with offence-skills to stop offence interference

  • 3:00-3:10 - Break

  • 3:10-3:25 - Jam starts

  • 3:25-4:45 - Directed scrim

  • 4:45-5:00 - Stretch and injury prevention chat.

We have exciting news - after a few years’ hiatus, our C team, the Cannie Gingers, are bubbling back up and their first game is coming up at the end of March!


Our freshest team is heading east to Dalkeith where our pals, Auld Reekie, are hosting a doubleheader.

First up, hailing all the way from Norwich, the Norfolk Brawds take on Auld Reekie's All-Stars for some nail biting top-tier skating!


Next up is the battle of the C Teams! The Gingers are taking on some of the newest skaters in Auld Reekie - so new, they’ve yet to name them!!

The Irn Bruisers will be taking on the fabulous Valkyries from Manchester Roller Derby. Glasgow’s very own Maiden Grrders will be facing off against New Town Roller Derby and some friends.

Our quarter 2 opener is an away game for the Maidens and the Bruisers against Liverpool Roller Birds' A & B teams.

With Liverpool currently ranked 40th in WFTDA in Europe, and Glasgow just behind them at 42nd, it should be a fair fight in Liverpool!

First whistle (Game 1): 1pm

Learn to Skate with Glasgow Roller Derby

Learn to play roller derby with us! We will teach you everything you need to know to become part of our next generation of skaters. There is absolutely no skating experience required to sign up – our beginners course will teach you all the basics from standing up, stopping, skating styles, jumping, backwards skating and more!

How to join

If you're interested, complete our intake form or get in touch via Facebook or Instagram with the following info:

  • Your name, email, and pronouns

  • If you need to borrow kit, if so which bits and what size (if you don't know, just ask!)

  • Any questions at all you have about Glasgow Roller Derby, learning to skate, or the sessions

Important information

  • You must be over 18 to sign up

  • Glasgow Roller Recruits (GRR) is open to all genders, but be aware that we're a Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) roller derby league so our teams are as per their gender statement

  • Participants MUST have:

    • a helmet

    • mouthguard

    • elbow pads

    • wrist guards

    • knee pads

    • quad roller skates.*

*If you are looking to get yourself some kit we recommend a trip to 5th Blocker Skates in The Savoy Centre, or take a look on “UK Roller Derby Recyclables” on Facebook.

We may also be able to provide kit for both short and longer term lease. Please contact us about this if required!
